Mission Hills

Historic architecture and breathtaking views.

Welcome to Mission Hills

Mission Hills is one of San Diego’s most upscale and desirable neighborhoods. Mission Hills was established following the master plan of George Marston, whose 1907 pamphlet vividly described the area’s astounding natural beauty.

Marston wrote of Mission Hills harbor’s “mirror of amethyst” that “held safe from the surges of the outer sapphire sea by the gigantic elbow of Point Loma, and the long low reaches of Coronado” as well as its views of “the little ‘Old Town’ of San Diego and the hamlet of Pacific Beach.

”Much of Mission Hills real estate’s mesmerizing architecture was constructed following the publication of Marston’s pamphlet, with other master architects adding to its unique real estate mix in the decades that followed. 320 properties within this stunning community have been recognized as designated historic homes.

The architecture is as diverse as the architects who have contributed to it, spanning Craftsman, Prairie School, Spanish Colonial Revival, and numerous other styles. The landscaping is equally masterful, with Kate Sessions’ expansive 1910 nursery still providing residents with a beautiful place to relax.

People & Lifestyle

Mission Hills has a sophisticated urban feel, making it perfect for those who want a combination of residential charm and big-city amenities. Most residents live in single-family homes that they own, so it’s a great area in which to settle down and get to know your neighbors. In addition, the neighborhood has a great walkability score, and it’s easy to get to top-rated eateries and upscale retail hubs by foot.

Mission Hills is a diverse community with a melting pot of culture. A large percentage of people with British and Eastern European ancestry live in the neighborhood, and many residents are multilingual, fluent in languages like French, Spanish, or Japanese in addition to English.

Just as Mission Hills isn’t dominated by one culture, it also varies in age demographics. From families with young children to active retirees, people from all walks of life call Mission Hills home. However, they tend to share interests in art, theatre, and literature.

As one of the wealthiest communities in the nation, the majority of Mission Hills residents work in professional, executive, and management positions. Thus, it is also one of the highest educated populations, with nearly 35% of people holding a Master's degree or higher.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

In recent years, Mission Hills has become one of San Diego’s culinary hotspots. Highlights include modern American cuisine at the open-air Patio on Goldfinch, authentic New York-style thin-crust pies, and calzones at Bronx Pizza, exceptional seafood tacos at Blue Water Seafood Market & Grill, and farm-to-table new American fare at Farmer’s Bottega. There are many places to unwind and get reenergized, with Heartwork Coffee Bar serving some of San Diego’s best blends and pour-overs.
